The Wingman Battlebook

Reflecting on the successes of my partnership with Ross Paterson, I realize there were three major components in becoming a great Small Business Xcelerator for him:

Proximity, Permission, Patterns

Dissecting sales calls, hearing phone conversations, riding alongside him to lunch meetings, and networking at his business owner forums helped me best connect the dots to become a better WINGMAN.

Ross didn’t want to give up his inbox, but I was eager to be a kick-butt SBX, so I told him I wanted to do this. He gave me permission to take work from him, and now he doesn’t even peek at his emails.

Whether in-person or virtually, we committed to meeting for daily 15-minute huddles to start or recap the day. Our weekly conversations helped us prepare for the week ahead operationally and also actively move the pipeline forward.

If you’ve assigned your wingman to a different office, invite them closer. If you struggle with “I am the only one who can” mentality, practice delegating. And if you don’t hold your weekly and daily rhythms sacred, prioritize those huddles.

I have seen these practices fast-track CEOs and their EAs to success, and I've also watched a lack of these principles lead to decline in an SBX’s performance. What do you need to change about your partnership for Xceleration in the next season?
